3D sensing

ams designs and manufactures unique illumination solutions for a broad range of 3D sensing cameras. Combining state-of-the-art Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) products with unique optical design and packaging expertise, ams provides best-in-class, reliable performance for the most demanding high-volume mobile platforms.

 

Infrared illuminators from ams are ideal for a variety of 3D cameras, including:

  • Structured light cameras with a unique, miniature dot-pattern projector
  • Active stereovision
  • Flood illuminators for front-facing and time-of-flight cameras

 

A 1D time-of-flight sensor is optimized for presence detection, and is part of the overall ams solution for 3D sensing.

 

Thanks to in-house software development and a system-level approach, ams is able to help customers to implement the most demanding 3D sensing applications such as face recognition and gesture detection.

Paper-like displays

An ams high-accuracy XYZ color sensor enables an emissive display to shift its white point to match the color temperature of the ambient light. The effect is to make displayed text as readable as printed paper, improving the user experience in devices such as tablets and smartphones.

Small aperture

Through innovative packaging and silicon design, ams ambient light sensing (ALS) and RGB sensors support operation via the smallest aperture behind inked glass in the industry. These sensors meet the most challenging industrial design requirements while providing superior proximity detection performance with minimal optical cross-talk.

Auto white-balancing (AWB)

RGB and XYZ color sensors from ams can be used to improve a camera’s image processing and AWB algorithm to produce a picture with excellent white balance – a result which today’s camera functions often fail to achieve. 

These sensors support the camera image sensor algorithm by providing critical information to the AWB algorithm about the color of the ambient light sources, enabling it to dramatically improve the white balance of the image.

Light-source detection

ams RGB and high-accuracy XYZ color sensors offer dedicated infrared photodiode detection channels which enable display management and automatic white-balancing (AWB) applications to optimize their performance. They do so by detecting the sources of light in the immediate environment. 

Auto-focus and background blur assist

1D Time-of-Flight sensors enable accurate and fast measurement of the distance to an object, which means that a camera can take in-focus pictures even of moving objects.

Environmental sensing

ams has a range of miniature environmental sensor solutions designed for low power consumption which can be used to monitor indoor air quality, temperature and relative humidity in smartphones and wearable devices.

 

ams is the industry’s leading provider of gas sensor solutions for air quality monitoring: its complete off-the-shelf solutions include the CCS811, which is supplied with software for indoor air quality monitoring applications, rendering raw gas measurements as values for total volatile organic compounds or equivalent CO2.

 

Temperature and relative humidity sensors from ams are ideal for space- and power-constrained products such as portable and connected smart home devices and appliances.

 

These environmental sensors offer very high tolerance of siloxanes, which are prevalent in the environment. This ensures that the sensors perform reliably over a long lifetime, providing a robust, high-temperature sensor platform which can operate for more than 400 million sense cycles.
